I am a first time slang lexicographer and independent slang researcher. I started delving into slang back in 2003. So far, I have researched thousands of books, websites, blogs, newspapers, magazines, and film scripts, song lyrics, and so on, as well as hundreds of slang dictionaries such as Partridge's dictionaries (both old and new), Jonathon Green's Cassell's Slang and Chambers Slang and now the multi-volume Green's dictionary of slang, and other authoritative literature, covering over 5 centuries of slang from all the Anglophone regions as well as Hinglish. I aim to make it one of the most comprehensive slang dictionaries of its kind. It is also my hope that after completing the book (though there is no such thing as a complete slang dictionary) it will be made into an online dictionary, in addition to book form, so that it will become more accessible and affordable for those who are interested in slang and informal English that is fully researched and backed up by authentic, early as well as current citations. I have also fully researched OED and other major dictionaries. I have so far built a database which at this point boasts thousands upon thousands of headwords (& counting) and thousands cites (& counting), all fully authenticated. Creole / Kreyòl Studies I (Pierre) FRN 190.01 TTh 11:40am-12:55pm An introduction to the essential elements of Haitian Creole or Kreyòl language and aspects of Haitian culture. The first of the two-semester sequence of elementary Haitian Creole or Kreyòl. the course provides practice in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing the language, culturally contextualized through units on health care, Haitian women's rights issues, and unpaid child servants (restavèk). Students will acquire enough vocabulary and idioms to be able to interact with Haitians. Each participant will pick a theme to work on and write a two-page final project. The textbooks "Kreyòl Ayisyen pou Swen Sante (KAPSS)" and "Ann Pale Kreyòl (APK)" will be supplemented by texts retrieved from Haitian websites and Haitian newspapers. Copies of these texts will be handed out three weeks before working on them in class. Additional cultural and grammatical notions will be explored in relation to each lesson from KAPSS and APK dialogues introduced in class. Throughout the course participants will be exposed to different aspects of Haitian culture through documentaries, music, films, card games, and proverbs. No prerequisite.
